Sometimes there shall be unusual and abnormal movements in the prices of stocks in a stock market. The price swings shall be very large. In this situation, the authorities of the stock exchange apply a Circuit Breaker. This is resorted to avoid panic selling and the trading is stopped for sometime. Thus, for example, if Dow falls by 10%, trading is halted for one hour.
