Stock Market Volume indicates the total volume of shares traded on a particular stock exchange or volumes of shares traded of a particular company or a group of company. It is an important and significant stock market indicator and you should consider the stock market volume of a company's shares before you decide investing in that company's stock. Lower volumes generally indicate low activity and high volatility (price swings) in the value of that company's stocks.

Total volume of all stocks traded in a stock market also indicate the level of activity in the stock market. Larger volumes generally means that the stock market is vibrant and active, while the lower volumes indicate a reverse scenario. However, in some case, there may be companies having good fundamentals ans still low volumes.

At a wider canvas, volumes of bigger stock exchanges like the NYSE and NASDAQ reveal the level of activities at these markets and the volumes traded at these exchanges form important tools for the analysts.
